After the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 2012, the new CPC Central Committee, with Xi Jinping as general secretary, embarked on a new mission of deepening reform, opening up and modernization. As this new page turns, Xi Jinping has delivered a series of speeches on the governance of China. Communicating concepts and governing principles of CPC leadership, his new ideas and assessments answer both theoretical and practical questions about China’s development in this new phase of the country’s history.

The book is a compilation of Xi Jinping’s major works from November 15, 2012, to June 13, 2014. It comprises 79 speeches, talks, interviews, instructions and correspondences across 18 chapters. Each item is accompanied by relevant notes about China’s social system, history and culture for readers’ reference. In addition the book also includes 45 photos taken at different stages of Xi’s life, which provide readers with more background about his work and life.

The publication of this book in various languages is of great significance. It will contribute to better interpretations of the concepts and principles of governance of the CPC leadership, and it will help the international community learn more about and better understand China’s ideas, its path of development, its domestic and foreign policies, and its responses to international concerns about China.

In his article “An Important Document to Understand Contemporary China in an Objective, All-Round Way - Introduction to Xi Jinping: The Governance of China,” Cai Mingzhao, Minister of the State Council Information Office, points out that the book maps the path and direction of China’s development, answers fundamental questions, such as “From where did today’s China come?” and “Where is it going to?” Minister Cai also believes that it proposes a series of new measures and ways of thinking about China’s reform, depicts a beautiful picture of the great renewal of the Chinese nation, interprets concepts of governance highlighted by “putting people first,” manifests passion for serving the people, showcases the profundity of Chinese culture in terms of ruling and governing the country, and demonstrates a broad vision of absorbing and drawing on the favorable achievements of human civilization. He also asserts that the book declares China’s firm commitment to a road of peaceful development and displays a good image of a big country shouldering great responsibility.

“The language is simple and refreshing and the stories are vivid,” opines Minister Cai. “It matches his character: simple and unadorned, honest and modest.”

“Through the book, readers will get a clearer picture of the governance concepts and strategies of China’s new central leadership, experience rich and time-honored Chinese history and culture, feel the drastic changes of modern China, feel Chinese people’s dreams and pursuits, and further their understanding of China’s developmental concepts and path as well as the country’s domestic and foreign policies.
