At the Heart of the Expo
Guo Xiaoyong

Inside the Sun Valleys, the nature theme continues with flames, trees, land, water, and metal in

its courtyards. The Expo Axis becomes even more attractive when natu ral elements, such as

sunlight, air, and rain, are driven into the underground space.

Along with their striking visual aesthetics, the Sun Valleys present important scientific and

technological solutions for enhancing green living underground. The innovative design funnels

sunshine and air underground to improve air quality and minimize energy required for artificial

lighting. Any rainwater that falls will flow into the underground space through a screen into a

reservoir with a capacity of 7,000 cubic meters, where it is treated and reused in the sunken

gardens on both sides of the Sun Valleys and in Expo restrooms. The reservoir will save an

estimated 50,000 cubic meters of water during its life, providing more than half of the water

consumed in the Expo Axis.

While strolling around the Expo, visitors can learn about creation and integration, an ongoing

dialogue between man and nature. The Shanghai World Expo will highlight man’s most important

achievements of the new century while sponsoring greater global cooperation and accelerated

development. It aims to leave the people of Shanghai and the world a rich legacy that will benefit

the lives of city-dwellers for generations to come.
