Travel Destination of the Month
A Valley of Color
The coming of fall marks the beginning of the most glorious season in Jiuzhaigou valley, which lies in Nanping County of Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. It is eye-catching throughout the year, but between mid-September and late October, autumnal colors coalesce to form a magical landscape unlike anywhere else on earth.
At this time of year, with its plentiful forest cover, Jiuzhaigou boasts a cool and pleasant climate. Around mid-September the rainy season ends and its lakes and waterfalls become even more magnificent. Also during this time, food and accommodation within the scenic area are slightly cheaper. In late October, vibrant maple leaves cover the mountains – a favorite scene for nature photographers. This period is generally the peak season to visit the valley, so for tourists prioritizing relaxation and tranquility, an earlier visit in September is definitely better.
Jiuzhaigou boasts abundant animals and plants, with primeval forests and more than 10 varieties of rare animals including the giant panda. Other attractions worth seeing are the Tibetan wooden houses, pontoon bridges, and mills.
Most visitors come via a travel agency, due to their convenience and experience. Typically, tours spend one day in the valley, another day in nearby Huanglong Valley, and usually also take in Emei Mountain and Leshan City, home of the famous giant carved Buddha. For independent travelers, warm clothes and umbrellas are a necessity. Temperatures can dip drastically at night.
Waterfalls are splendid in September, just after the rainy season.
